Gender plays a role in pretty much every aspect of our lives, whether we like it or not. In some cases, gender really shouldn’t determine the manner in which you have currently chosen to end up living your life. Rather, it should be something that represents who you are, not what you have the ability to do competently and effectively. In some cases, though, the gender of the person that would be given certain responsibility matters too much to be ignored, even if people don’t like that it is being brought into consideration.
One example of this would be with domestic violence attorneys. When you are hiring an attorney for a domestic violence charge, you need to prefer women above all others. The reason behind this is that women are the only ones that would be able to understand what another woman has gone through. That’s not to say that men don’t suffer from domestic violence, of course. However, women do tend to be domestic violence victims far more often than men, which is why selecting female attorneys for these roles is so important.
No matter how academically sound a man is as a lawyer, there will be a limit to how much they can relate to the pain a domestic violence victim has suffered. Establishing a rapport and an understanding with your lawyer is really important. It can help your lawyer empathize with you and build a case accordingly. Women are also going to be more heavily invested in domestic violence cases because they know how difficult it can be to go through something like this, so you would have some assurance that your attorney would work really hard.
